In June 1944, Arromanches-les-Bains was a focal point of the Allied invasion during World War II. The British 50th Infantry Division landed on Gold Beach, which included Arromanches, as part of Operation Overlord. To facilitate the rapid offloading of troops and supplies, the Allies constructed the Mulberry B artificial harbour offshore. This innovative port was assembled in Britain, towed across the English Channel, and pieced together in Arromanches, providing a crucial logistical hub for the invasion forces. (dday-overlord.com)
