In the late 19th century, St Ives was a bustling fishing port, with its heyday between 1850 and 1900. The area from Market Place towards Porthmeor Beach, known as Downalong, was the heart of the fishing community. Fishermen lived in small cottages behind the harbour and Porthmeor Beach, where they cured and packed pilchards for export in cellars beneath the cottages. The last successful seine catch occurred in 1905, marking the end of an era for the town's fishing industry. (hmdb.org)
