## Eastgate, Chester
In 1768, Richard Grosvenor, 1st Earl Grosvenor, funded the reconstruction of Chester's Eastgate, transforming it into a three-arched sandstone structure to accommodate increasing traffic. This "elegant arch" replaced the medieval gate, which had been a prominent feature since the Roman era. The current design includes a central arch flanked by smaller pedestrian arches, with the city walls walkway crossing its top. In 1899, to commemorate Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee, architect John Douglas added the Eastgate Clock, which has since become one of the most photographed clocks in England. (visit-chester.co.uk)
