In 1810, convicts carved a sandstone seat into the rock at Mrs Macquarie's Point for Elizabeth Macquarie, wife of Governor Lachlan Macquarie. This seat, known as Mrs Macquarie's Chair, provided Elizabeth with a vantage point to watch for ships entering Sydney Harbour. The surrounding area, originally called Yurong Point by the Gadigal people, was later named Mrs Macquarie's Point in her honour. The peninsula now forms part of The Domain, adjacent to the Royal Botanic Gardens, and offers iconic views of the Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge. (en.wikipedia.org)
