In 1484, during Richard III's reign, the upper storey of Monk Bar was added, enhancing its defensive capabilities. (britainallover.com) This four-storey gatehouse, constructed primarily of magnesian limestone, features circular bartizans at the north and east angles and a low-pitched leaded roof. (her.york.gov.uk) The passageway and two lower storeys above have ribbed vaults. A lofty arch on the outer face between the bartizans supports a narrow crenellated gallery at third-floor level. (her.york.gov.uk) The rooms above the gateway have had various uses over the years, including as a home and as a jail for rebellious Catholics in the 16th century. (historyofyork.org.uk) Monk Bar retains its portcullis, which was in use until 1970, and features 'murder-holes' through which missiles and boiling water could be dropped on attackers. (historyofyork.org.uk) In 2020, the Richard III Experience museum closed, and in 2026, the Monk Bar Shop opened, offering a 'historical shopping experience' with products like replica historical wear and soft toy dragon plushies.
