Windsor Bridge, connecting Windsor and Eton across the River Thames, was inaugurated on 1 June 1824. Designed by Charles Hollis, the bridge features three cast iron arches supported by granite piers. The foundation stone was laid in July 1822 by Prince Frederick, Duke of York and Albany. The construction faced challenges, including the death of the original contractor, William Moore, and defective cast iron ribs. Despite these setbacks, the bridge was completed at a cost of £15,000. (windsor.gov.uk) Initially a toll bridge, charges were abolished in 1897 following public protests. In 1970, structural issues led to its closure to motor traffic; it now serves exclusively pedestrians and cyclists. The bridge was refurbished in 2002, enhancing its structural integrity and aesthetic appeal. (en.wikipedia.org)
