About Old Bridge, Pontypridd

Pontypridd’s famous Old Bridge was built across the River Taff in 1756 by self-taught stonemason and local minister William Edwards. At the time, its single arch was the longest bridge span of its kind in Europe, a distinction it retained for around 80 years.

The surviving bridge was Edwards’ fourth attempt. Its distinctive circular openings were designed to reduce the weight and pressure on the arch after earlier versions had failed. Today the Old Bridge is restricted to pedestrians and remains one of Pontypridd’s best-known historic landmarks.

In 1756, self-taught stonemason William Edwards completed the Old Bridge across the River Taff in Pontypridd, Wales. This single-span arch bridge, rising 35 feet above the river, was the longest of its kind in Europe at the time. Edwards' innovative design featured three circular openings at each end to reduce weight and pressure on the arch. Despite its grandeur, the steep incline made it challenging for horse-drawn carts, leading to the construction of the Victoria Bridge in 1857. Today, the Old Bridge remains a Grade I listed structure and a cherished landmark in Pontypridd. (rctourheritage.com)
