In the early 19th century, Reverend Jeremiah Trist commissioned the construction of five distinctive round cottages in Veryan, Cornwall, to house his five daughters. Built between 1815 and 1818 by builder Hugh Rowe, these cottages are constructed of whitewashed cob with thatched roofs, each topped with a cross. Two cottages were placed at each entrance to the village, and a fifth was built near the school. Local legend suggests that the round design was intended to prevent the devil from hiding in corners, thereby protecting the village. However, this belief is not substantiated by historical evidence.
