In 1536, Henry VIII completed St James's Palace on the site of a former leper hospital, dedicating it to St James the Less. Initially a secondary residence, it gained prominence after the 1698 fire that destroyed the Palace of Whitehall, becoming the principal royal residence. The palace's Chapel Royal hosted Queen Victoria's wedding to Prince Albert in 1840. By the late 19th century, Buckingham Palace emerged as the main royal residence, and St James's Palace transitioned to its current role as the ceremonial seat of the British monarchy. Today, it remains the official residence of several royal family members and hosts numerous charitable events annually. (royal.uk)
