In late July 1944, during the Battle of Normandy, Tessy-sur-Vire became a focal point of intense military activity. On 31 July, the German defense line, manned by remnants of the 352nd Infantry Division and the 2nd Panzer Division, was positioned just 4 kilometers from the town. Allied forces, having launched Operation Cobra on 25 July, were advancing rapidly. By 1 August, the 30th Infantry Division of Major General Leland S. Hobbs attacked from the north, while Combat Command A of the 2nd Armored Division, temporarily attached to the 29th Infantry Division, advanced from the west. Despite initial setbacks, including mechanical failures of American tanks and heavy German resistance, the Allies managed to establish a bridgehead in Tessy-sur-Vire by the afternoon. The 22nd Infantry Regiment of the 4th Infantry Division entered the town, and the 120th Infantry Regiment of the 30th Infantry Division secured the northern suburbs. In response, German forces launched multiple artillery attacks on the town, which continued until its liberation on 2 August 1944. (dday-overlord.com)
