In July 1944, Caen, a vital road junction in Normandy, was heavily bombed by Allied forces during the Battle of Caen. The city was captured by British and Canadian troops on 9 July 1944 after intense fighting. (lermuseum.org) Photographs from this period depict the devastation, with streets lined with rubble and destroyed buildings. One notable image shows Canadian troops entering Caen at the intersection of Rue Froide and Rue Saint-Pierre on 10 July 1944. (commons.wikimedia.org) Another photograph captures a deserted street scene in Caen, with café bars and a sign indicating the city centre, taken between 1944 and 1945. (ww2online.org) These images provide a glimpse into the city's condition during the liberation.
