In 1905, Holland House, a Jacobean mansion in Kensington, was inherited by Giles Fox-Strangways, the 6th Earl of Ilchester. During his tenure, the surrounding land was developed into the Ilchester Estate, including Ilchester Place, completed in 1928. (en.wikipedia.org) The house's final grand event was a debutante ball in 1939, attended by King George VI and Queen Elizabeth. The following year, during the Blitz, Holland House was severely damaged by incendiary bombs, with only the east wing and library surviving. (lookup.london) In 1952, the house and its grounds were sold to the London County Council, and the surviving east wing was repurposed as a youth hostel. (en.wikipedia.org) Today, the ruins of Holland House serve as a backdrop for the open-air Holland Park Theatre, and the surrounding gardens are part of the public Holland Park. (britainexpress.com)
