## Kingsgate, Winchester
Kingsgate, one of Winchester's two surviving medieval gates, was first documented in 1148. It likely replaced a Roman gate and served as the main entrance to the royal palace before the Cathedral Close was enclosed in the 10th century. The current structure, dating from the 14th century, features 18th-century pedestrian walkways. Above the gate stands St Swithun-upon-Kingsgate Church, built in the Early English style, which has been part of the city's fabric since the 13th century. Notably, it was fictionalized as St Cuthbert's in Anthony Trollope's novel "The Warden." Today, Kingsgate remains a scheduled monument, with St Swithun's Church recognized as a Grade I listed building. (en.wikipedia.org)
