The John Ownby Cabin, constructed in the 1860s, is the last surviving structure from the pre-park Forks-of-the-River community in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Built by John Ownby, a member of the prominent Ownby family, the cabin is a single-story, single-pen structure measuring 20 by 18 feet. Its walls are made of hand-hewn white pine and tulip poplar logs, joined with dovetail notching. The gabled roof is covered with split-oak shingles, and the chimney is constructed of rocks and clay mortar sourced from the surrounding area. The cabin was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. (home.nps.gov)
