  • Bromyard Cottage 1905 – 2025

Bromyard Cottage Hospital, established in 1869, represents a significant chapter in the development of rural healthcare in Herefordshire. As one of the early examples of the cottage hospital movement, it was built to address local medical needs through community support and funding. These hospitals played a vital role in offering accessible emergency and surgical care, serving as a humane alternative to the often harsh conditions of workhouse infirmaries.

Although Bromyard Cottage Hospital had to cease operations in 1917 due to financial difficulties, it paved the way for the region’s healthcare evolution. By 1948, many of Herefordshire’s cottage hospitals had transitioned into the NHS, ensuring that the legacy of community-based healthcare continued. The image comparison highlights the enduring influence of such institutions in the landscape of local healthcare.
