A little history of Higham

Higham, Kent

Higham, a village in Kent, England, has a rich history spanning from Roman times to the present. Archaeological findings, including a Roman grave, attest to its ancient origins.

In the 12th century, Higham was home to a priory dedicated to St. Mary, established by Mary, daughter of King Stephen. This priory, also known as Lillechurch, received royal grants, including one from King Henry III in 1227.

The Church of St. Mary, built in the 13th and 14th centuries, stands in the hamlet of Church Street. Notably, Charles Dickens' daughter, Kate, was married here in 1860.

Higham's most renowned landmark is Gad's Hill Place, the country home of Charles Dickens from 1857 until his death in 1870. Dickens purchased the house in 1856 for £1,790, fulfilling a childhood dream.

Today, Higham retains its historical charm, with landmarks like the Church of St. Mary and Gad's Hill Place, reflecting its rich heritage.
