A little history of Harbour Wall

Harbour Wall, St Andrews

St Andrews Harbour, located in the coastal town of St Andrews, Scotland, has been integral to the town's development since the 14th century. The harbour's evolution is closely linked to the St Andrews Cathedral Priory, with the Priory Precinct Wall significantly influencing the expansion and widening of the quays in the Inner Harbour.

In the 16th century, the construction of an extensive pier, bulwark to seaward, and linear masonry quays marked the initial separation of the Inner and Outer Harbours. These developments facilitated the harbour's role as a vital hub for trade and pilgrimage, accommodating a growing number of vessels and visitors.

The 19th century saw further enhancements, including the extension of the protective pier and bulwark to improve safety. Today, St Andrews Harbour continues to serve as a working harbour, supporting a small inshore fishing fleet and providing moorings for private yachts and boats.
