A little history of Gunwalloe
Gunwalloe, Cornwall
Gunwalloe, located on Cornwall's Lizard Peninsula, is a coastal civil parish with a rich history. The manor of Winnianton, encompassing Gunwalloe, is listed first in the Domesday Book of 1086, indicating its early significance. The Church of Saint Winwaloe, known as the Church of the Storms, was rebuilt in the 14th to 15th centuries, with its separate tower possibly dating to the 13th century. The parish's economy historically centred on pilchard fishing; in 1884, the local pilchard seine fishery was auctioned, including equipment like the Good Templar stop seine and a seine boat. The Halzephron Inn, built in 1468, is renowned for its smuggling history and is constructed with timber salvaged from shipwrecks. Archaeological excavations in 2010 revealed an early medieval site, highlighting the area's long-standing human presence. Today, Gunwalloe is part of the Cornwall Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, reflecting its historical and natural significance.
