A little history of Dunure, Scotland
Dunure, Scotland
Dunure is a coastal village in South Ayrshire, Scotland, approximately 5 miles south of Ayr. The village is renowned for the ruins of Dunure Castle, a 13th-century fortress that served as the seat of the Kennedy family, the Earls of Cassillis. The castle, originally built in the 1200s, was expanded in the 15th and 16th centuries, featuring a six-storey keep and a chapel. In August 1563, Mary, Queen of Scots, visited the castle during her tour of the west coast.
The village's harbour, improved in 1811, was once a bustling fishing port. Today, it remains a picturesque spot, with the surrounding area offering coastal walks and views of the Firth of Clyde. Dunure's historical significance is further highlighted by its association with the Kennedy family, who were once among the most powerful in southwestern Scotland.
