A little history of Craigmillar, Edinburgh
Craigmillar is a district in the southeastern part of Edinburgh, Scotland, approximately three miles from the city centre. Historically, it was a rural area until the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when industrialisation and urban expansion led to significant development. The establishment of the Craigmillar Creamery in 1884 marked a notable industrial presence, becoming one of Scotland's largest margarine factories at the time.
The area underwent substantial housing development in the early 20th century, with the Niddrie Mains housing scheme established through the Housing Act of 1924. This initiative aimed to accommodate the growing population by providing new homes, leading to the construction of numerous tenements and residential buildings.
In recent decades, Craigmillar has experienced significant regeneration efforts. Initiatives have focused on revitalising the area by constructing new housing, schools, and community facilities, as well as enhancing green spaces and recreational areas. These developments aim to improve the quality of life for residents and attract new businesses and visitors to the area.
