A little history of Bernières

Bernières-sur-Mer, situated in the Calvados department of Normandy, France, is among the oldest towns along the Côte de Nacre. Archaeological evidence indicates human habitation since the Gallo-Roman period, with traces visible in the cliffs of Cape Romain east of the town.

During the Middle Ages, Bernières prospered under the influence of William the Conqueror. The Church of Bernières, with its Romanesque nave dating from 1130-1140 and Gothic choir from the 13th century, exemplifies the region's architectural evolution.

In the early 20th century, Bernières developed into a seaside resort, attracting visitors with its sandy beaches, dunes, and embankments. The town was liberated on 6 June 1944 by Canadian forces during the D-Day landings. The remains of the Atlantic Wall are still visible, serving as a place of remembrance where locals honor the Canadians each year.
