In 1810, Governor Lachlan Macquarie commissioned the construction of a private landing place at Bennelong Point, known as the Man O'War Steps. This stone jetty, completed between 1810 and 1820, provided a sheltered harbour for small craft and was initially reserved for the Governor's use. By 1850, the Admiralty referred to it as a "stone pier," primarily used for watering ships anchored nearby. The name "Man O'War Steps" likely emerged in the late 1860s, reflecting its association with naval activities. Over the years, the structure underwent several modifications, including the addition of wooden wharves and pontoons. In 1973, it was restored to coincide with the opening of the Sydney Opera House, and a commemorative plaque was installed to honour its naval history. (en.wikipedia.org)
